Discover the benefits of hydrotherapy

Cold water therapy, also known as cryotherapy or hydrotherapy, involves immersing the body in cold water for therapeutic purposes. It can include cold showers, ice baths, or swimming in cold water.

Benefits

  • Reduces pain and inflammation: Cold water constricts blood vessels, which reduces blood flow and swelling. This can help with muscle pain and stiffness after exercise.
  • Improves cardiovascular health: Cold water therapy can improve blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
  • Boosts the immune system: Cold water therapy can help lower the risk of infection.
  • Improves mood and stress management: Cold water therapy can help with depression and improve general wellbeing.
  • Activates the parasympathetic system: Immersing your face in cold water can activate the parasympathetic system, which can release a sense of calm.

How to do it

  • Start with 1-2 minutes in cold water, especially if you're a beginner.
  • Gradually increase the time you spend in cold water as your tolerance builds.
  • Keep the water temperature steady between 10-15 degrees centigrade (50-59 degrees Fahrenheit).
  • Plan for short immersions and gradual warmups afterward.

Safety

Cold water immersion can have harmful effects on the human body. You should talk to your doctor first to make sure it's safe for you. If you plan to swim in open water, make sure someone goes with you.
